Why the Sea is Salty for McGraw-Hill

Here is another book that I illustrated this year for McGraw-Hill. It's called Why the Sea is Salty, and is based off of a Filipino folktale. This story is part of the KinderBound series, which is a 4-week educational program designed to transition preschoolers to kindergarten.

I had a lot of fun sneaking the little crab into lots of the pictures. He became a mascot, and was used in the workbook that accompanies the story as well. Have a look at a few of the spreads below.

American Lawyer

This illustration is for an article in American Lawyer's January issue about the growing percentage of women being made partners in law firms. A 30% average may not seem like much, but it's a big improvement from a couple decades ago.

The Little Red Hen for McGraw-Hill

I've been working on a project for McGraw-Hill and I am thrilled to be able to show the first part of it. The entire project consisted of 3 children's books, and teachers' guides to accompany each book. The total number of illustrations weighed in at a hefty 156 pages!

The first story is a classic, The Little Red Hen, and true to the original, her friends still won't help her with baking that loaf of bread. Here are a few spreads from my version.

Gunpower River Artfest Poster Illustration

I had such a good time working on last year's Gunpowder River Artfest that I just had to do it again. This year's illustration is being printed on t-shirts, posters, banners and more. I focused on the idea of growing an art community for the image. The Artfest is on June 4, 2011, so mark your calendars! More details will be posted here, or visit the NBCAF website.

Illustration for The Incoherent Left – The Chronicle Review

6a010535e0c68e970c0147e2430854970b-250wi.jpg

I recently illustrated a piece for The Chronicle Review about the political left — a great opportunity to play with format a bit. Author Todd Gitlin writes, "Once upon a time, in a century far, far away, there was an idea of a single, interconnected left in a single, interconnected world—a unified force, or a vanguard, or a virtual chamber of the deputies of the people, some entity whose mission was to lead the way toward the realization of a collective and universal ideal."

The entire story is available for subscribershere.

I've recently launched a new sketch blog,  — a place to post my most recent drawings. The current series of sketches are all drawn on my ipad, which follows me nearly everywhere. Here are just a couple:

New Book!

When Skinner House contacted me to illustrate A Child's Book of Animal Poems and Blessings, I couldn't resist. 32 pages of animal pictures? Sure!

The publisher's description:

These poems, prayers and blessings about our animal brethren are drawn from around the world and throughout history. Speaks to a child’s sense of connection with the animal kingdom. By turns amusing and reverential, Blanchard weaves together a collection that inspires gratitude and joy for a world rich in diversity and wonder. Sources include the Bible, African and Native American cultures, Lewis Carroll, William Wordsworth and Christina Rosetti. Full-color illustrations by Joyce Hesselberth. Ages 5-7.

New York Times Illustration

6a010535e0c68e970c0133ec7ab2dc970b-800wi.jpg

Here is  recent piece I illustrated for the New York Times, art-directed by Peter Morance. I worked with a lot of textures, and a hand-painted background. The story by Roni Caryn Rabin, discusses evidence that childhood obesity may start even earlier than we thought, and by the time that children are school age, damage is already done.

Society of Illustrators 52

Dave and I recently headed up to New York for the opening of the Society of Illustrators 52: Sequential and Uncommissioned Exhibit. Dave had a series of Theatre Project posters in the sequential category.

And I had a PrestoBingo giraffe print in the uncommissioned category. We took some time to wander through the city, un-froze ourselves with a lovely dinner at Fig and Olive, and then headed to the opening to catch up with some illustration friends and see the show.
